about
This song was born early on in isolation, shortly after Toronto shut down to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The store shelves were looking pretty empty and the fear in the air was palpable.
Here we all were, having to make choices about who we would hunker down with, about where we would spend our time, about who or what really matters the most.
I was thinking about that when I wrote this song, about how our choices can sometimes end up being different than we would have expected when they're made in the face of a crisis.
This demo was recorded in my little writing office, where the sounds of streetcars passing and the clock tower chiming inevitably bleed into whatever I'm working on. (They call that charm, right?)
lyrics
If you knew the end was coming
Tell me what you'd do
Would you fly across an ocean?
Would you drive the whole night through?
Questions we ask in the light of day
When the sun still shines, when everything's okay
Sound different now as the shadows fall
In the dead of night, when it isn't all
Hypothetical
When the stakes are raised and I don't know
If you still feel the same
If I knew the end was coming
I'd buy a ticket to
Wherever you were living
If you wanted me to be with you
Questions we ask in the light of day
When the sun still shines, when everything's okay
Sound different now as the shadows fall
In the dead of night, when it isn't all
Hypothetical
When the stakes are raised and I don't know
If you still feel the same
Oh, is this a dream,
A nightmare that I had before
Let me sleep it off
Wake me up when this is over
If you knew the end was coming
Tell me what you'd do
If you knew the end was coming
Tell me what you'd do
