Swim is the first single from my upcoming album, Calm Fury. It's one of eleven songs that came out of a research project I conducted on how Canadians experience, express and repress anger, especially women.
One of my interviewees made an interesting observation about how repetitive physical motion can help release feelings of anger. Swim compares the experience of physical exertion with the sensation of anger in the body. It also describes one of my personal coping mechanisms for feeling and releasing feelings of anger--attending my neighbourhood lane swim!
lyrics
I focus on my breath, on my breath
I push away from the edge
Every exhale measures time
Bittersweet symphony keeps playing
Ironic quartet of strings
So I swim to match the pace
Feel my heart begin to race
Feel fires rage
Lungs burn, hands shake
Touch, turn
Work it out inside the lane
I focus on the place that I am in
Water covering my skin
And it all begins to fade
Carried off with each new wave
Feel fires rage
Ice form, glass break
Lungs burn, hands shake
Touch, turn, rethink
Touch, turn
Work it out inside the lane
